As of March 2006, VA DEQ has discontinued the Salem PM 2.5 monitor. The monitor was originally shut down to accomodate roof repairs. Then 4 new big air conditioning units were installed on the roof. According to DEQ, these units prevented the operation of the PM 2.5 monitor at the fire station location. U.S. EPA has told DEQ that the one Raleigh Court location will serve the Roanoke Valley, thus the PM 2.5 monitor previously located in Salem will not be relocated within the Roanoke Valley.
